Tequila Lovers Rejoice: Guadalajara’s Famous Train is Back on Track
After more than nine years, the iconic Tequila Express train is back in operation, offering a scenic roundtrip journey between Guadalajara and the town of Tequila. Officially relaunched last month, this revival is the result of a $9 million collaboration among government, tourism, and railroad entities. The train provides an efficient and unique transportation option to Tequila, a Pueblo Mágico and the heart of tequila production in Jalisco.
While other train services already connect the two cities, such as branded luxury experiences from Jose Cuervo and Herradura, the Tequila Express stands out as a general transportation service. Unlike branded tours with pre-set itineraries and mixed bus-train travel, this train focuses on offering passengers flexibility and convenience. Onboard, travelers can enjoy food and, naturally, tequila. Once the train reaches Tequila, an included shuttle takes passengers to the downtown area, where they can freely explore or connect with local tour operators.
The original Tequila Express began operations in 1997 but ceased service in 2015, partly due to competition from the branded train tours. The town of Tequila itself serves as a cultural hub, surrounded by sprawling blue agave fields, akin to California’s wine country. Passengers can soak in the stunning views of agave plantations and visit local tasting rooms and production facilities nestled within the picturesque farmland.
In Tequila, visitors will find a charming town square surrounded by lodging, bars, restaurants, and branded tasting rooms. Additional attractions, such as the National Tequila Museum, provide opportunities to delve deeper into the history and culture of tequila production.
The Tequila Express runs every weekend from Friday to Sunday. Tickets, available online, offer two travel classes: Executive for about $87 and First Class for around $108, both roundtrip. The train schedule accommodates both day trips and weekend getaways, allowing visitors ample time to explore Tequila’s offerings.
The route traverses the Jalisco countryside, a UNESCO-protected site recognized for its historical importance and natural beauty. Blue agave cultivation in this region dates back to the 16th century, cementing its place as a cultural and agricultural treasure. The return of the Tequila Express offers a seamless blend of history, stunning landscapes, and the rich traditions of tequila-making.
