Southwest Airlines is making a significant change to its seating policy, ending its decades-long practice of open seating. Starting in early 2026, the airline will introduce assigned seating as part of its three-year transformation initiative called “Southwest. Even Better.”

The move, announced by CEO Bob Jordan during the Goldman Sachs Industrials and Materials Conference, aims to enhance customer experience without compromising the company’s core values. “It’s not going to change who we are or the values that we stand for, but it changes the product that we can offer our customers,” Jordan explained.

Here’s everything you need to know about Southwest’s new seating plan and what it means for travelers.

When Does Assigned Seating Begin?

Southwest will officially roll out assigned seating in early 2026. Tickets for flights offering this new option will go on sale in the second half of 2025, giving passengers ample time to prepare for the change.

How Will Assigned Seating Work?

The process will mirror what many other airlines already do. Passengers who purchase the lowest fare tickets can pay an additional fee to select their seats in advance. For those who choose not to pay, seats will be assigned free of charge the day before departure.

Premium Seating Options

For those seeking more comfort, Southwest will offer premium seats with extra legroom. Approximately one-third of the seats on each aircraft will fall into this category, and passengers who purchase premium seating will enjoy priority boarding.

Here’s what the premium seating availability will look like:

  • Boeing 737-8 and 737-800: 68 seats with 3 extra inches of legroom.
  • Boeing 737-7: 48 seats with 3 extra inches of legroom.
  • Boeing 737-700: 40 seats with 5 extra inches of legroom.

Benefits for Rapid Rewards Members

Southwest is also extending perks for its Rapid Rewards members:

  • A-List Members: Can select standard seats with no additional charge at the time of booking. They can upgrade to premium seating for free within 48 hours of departure if available.
  • A-List Preferred Members: Can select any seat, including premium options, at no extra cost.

What’s New About the Seats?

The upgraded seating will feature enhanced comfort and functionality, including:

  • Six-way adjustable headrests.
  • Extra cushioning.
  • Holders for electronic devices.

Why the Change?

Southwest’s shift to assigned seating aligns with its efforts to provide more personalized experiences for travelers while staying competitive in the evolving airline industry. By adding premium seating and assigned options, the airline aims to attract a broader range of passengers while maintaining the affordability and service it’s known for.

This change marks a new era for Southwest Airlines, offering passengers more options to customize their travel experiences. Whether you prefer extra legroom, early boarding, or the convenience of a pre-assigned seat, Southwest’s updated seating policy promises to deliver a more flexible and comfortable journey.
