Seven Guests Hospitalized After Drinking Cocktails at Luxury Fiji Resort
Seven tourists, including four Australians, fell seriously ill after consuming cocktails at the Warwick Fiji resort, a high-end property known for its stunning ocean views and luxury accommodations. The group, aged 18 to 56, reported nausea, vomiting, and neurological symptoms, prompting immediate hospitalization.
What Happened?
The affected guests reportedly drank a piña colada cocktail served at the resort’s bar on Saturday. Fiji’s Ministry of Health confirmed the incident and stated that the hospitalized individuals are now in stable condition.
Sydney resident David Sandoe shared that his daughter and granddaughter were among those affected. “They were with a group in the lounge, and all had a similar cocktail. Unfortunately, seven of them experienced severe symptoms,” Sandoe said.
As of Monday, investigations into the exact cause are ongoing. Officials are examining whether methanol poisoning or drink spiking may have been involved, though no conclusions have been reached.
A Rare Occurrence
Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister, Viliame R. Gavoka, emphasized that this was an “extremely isolated” incident. “The resort has been operating for years with a stellar reputation, particularly among Australian visitors. No other incidents have been reported at the resort or elsewhere in Fiji,” he assured.
The Warwick Fiji, part of the globally recognized Warwick Hotels and Resorts group, has pledged full cooperation in the investigation. “We are taking this matter very seriously and are committed to ensuring the safety of our guests,” the resort stated.
Rising Concerns About Alcohol Safety
The incident follows global concerns about alcohol safety after six tourists in Laos died from methanol poisoning in November. These events have sparked heightened awareness about drink safety, particularly for international travelers.
Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers reiterated this concern, advising travelers to remain cautious. “Don’t leave your drinks unattended and always watch as they’re being prepared. Seek immediate medical help if you suspect something is wrong,” he said.

Gavoka reassured visitors that Fiji remains a safe holiday spot, with thousands currently enjoying vacations across its islands. “This is the first reported case of its kind in recent memory. We are working quickly to uncover the cause,” he said.
