“This way, visitors will have ample opportunity to observe it and understand the values it embodies,” he said.
New Visitor Guidelines to Prevent Overcrowding
With the Jubilee expected to attract massive crowds, Rome’s city officials have introduced new measures to manage the flow of tourists and protect the historic site. Key changes include:
- Limited Access: A maximum of 400 visitors will be allowed near the fountain at one time.
- Online Booking System: Visitors must reserve their spot online and pay an entry fee of €2 ($2.20).
- Timed Visits: Each guest will have 30 minutes to enjoy the fountain once inside the designated area.
Keeping the Tradition Alive
Even during the restoration, the beloved tradition of tossing coins into the Trevi Fountain continued. A temporary pool allowed visitors to participate in this age-old ritual, which, according to Roman lore, ensures a return trip to the city.
This custom generates an estimated €1.5 million ($1.6 million) annually. For the past 15 years, the funds collected from the fountain have been donated to Caritas, a Catholic charity that helps those in need.
