The future of air travel is set to be more connected and personalized than ever before, according to Viasat’s 2024 Passenger Experience Survey. The global satellite communications leader surveyed over 11,000 air travelers worldwide to explore how connectivity influences their in-flight experience and loyalty to airlines.

Connectivity as a Key Driver for Loyalty

The survey revealed that a staggering 75% of passengers are more likely to choose or rebook with an airline that offers high-quality in-flight Wi-Fi. For long-haul routes, 22% of travelers stated they wouldn’t even consider flying with an airline that doesn’t provide connectivity.

But simply offering Wi-Fi isn’t enough anymore. Passengers increasingly expect affordable and reliable internet as part of their travel experience. Nearly 36% of respondents cited free or low-cost Wi-Fi as a critical factor, with 87% willing to watch ads to access it. Almost half (47%) felt this was a fair trade-off for free connectivity.

Entertainment and Dual-Screening

Personalized entertainment is becoming a cornerstone of the in-flight experience. According to the survey, 71% of passengers want access to their own streaming platforms, such as Netflix, while 41% said this would significantly improve their trip. Similarly, 33% expressed interest in streaming their music through platforms like Spotify.

The trend of “dual-screening” is also on the rise. While seatback entertainment remains popular, 94% of respondents want to use their personal devices for activities such as browsing the web (46%), accessing social media (46%), or even online shopping and work tasks (29%).

Passengers Dream Big

The survey also delved into travelers’ aspirations for future in-flight innovations. Nearly all respondents (92%) were curious about technological advancements that could enhance their experience.

Over half (55%) were excited by the prospect of immersive entertainment options, such as floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, mixed reality displays offering information about passing landmarks, and virtual reality systems. Meanwhile, 51% hoped for wellness-focused features, including seating that adapts to their body, health-monitoring sensors, and even in-flight spas and gyms.

Passengers are also open to artificial intelligence playing a role in improving their journeys, with 33% interested in AI recognizing their food preferences, suggesting destination itineraries, or optimizing airport transfers.

The Role of Airlines in Shaping the Future

For airlines, these findings underscore the importance of investing in robust satellite connectivity to meet rising passenger expectations. Viasat Vice President Don Buchman emphasized that airlines that prioritize high-speed, reliable Wi-Fi will gain a significant competitive edge.

“Flying in the near future will be defined by unprecedented levels of personalization and choice,” Buchman said. “Airlines that embrace this transformation will enjoy greater customer loyalty and a competitive advantage.”

Shelli Brunswick, a futurist and innovation expert, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the need for seamless connectivity to create a more immersive and satisfying travel experience. Drawing inspiration from technological advancements in space exploration, she suggested that airlines could turn flights into transformative experiences, boosting passenger satisfaction and loyalty.

A New Standard for Air Travel

The insights from Viasat’s report suggest that the future of air travel lies in blending connectivity, technology, and personalization. Airlines that invest in these areas can set a new standard for passenger experience, turning flights into highly engaging, digitally connected journeys that cater to modern travelers’ needs and expectations.

With these advancements on the horizon, the days of simply enduring long flights may soon transform into opportunities for productivity, entertainment, and even wellness. The airlines that lead this charge are poised to redefine air travel for the better.
