Hawaii Travelers to Lose Direct Service to Narita Airport in 2025

The aviation landscape for Hawaii travelers is changing, as Alaska Airlines adjusts its routes and Hawaiian Airlines reshuffles its flights. While these changes mean more flights to the U.S. West Coast, Honolulu will lose its direct connection to Narita Airport in Japan starting in 2025.

Shift in Demand Leads to Route Changes

A decline in travel demand between Hawaii and Japan has prompted Alaska Airlines to reallocate its larger aircraft. Flights between Honolulu and Narita will now operate from Seattle instead.

“A weaker demand for seats to and from Tokyo has led to this adjustment,” said aviation expert Peter Forman. “By shifting one of the planes to fly from Seattle, airlines can achieve better load factors across all routes. This move addresses a short-term challenge while ensuring profitability.”

Hawaii Tourism Japan echoed this sentiment, explaining that airlines make fleet assignments based on market demand.

“As demand rebounds from Japan to Hawaii, airlines will adjust their resources accordingly, bringing more flights and increased capacity back to the islands,” said a representative from Hawaii Tourism Japan.

Impact on Local Jobs

Despite losing the Narita route, Hawaii’s aviation sector is seeing a boost in jobs. Alaska Airlines has added more Hawaiian Airlines planes to its fleet, increasing operational efficiency and creating opportunities for local union workers.

“These changes are actually positive for jobs,” Forman said. “With better utilization of planes like the A321, we’re seeing up to 25% more efficiency, which translates to more paychecks for the local workforce.”

Hawaiian Airlines Adjusts Tokyo Service

Hawaiian Airlines is doubling down on its routes to Haneda Airport, another major international hub in Tokyo. The airline plans to increase service between Honolulu and Haneda from 12 to 14 weekly flights, ensuring continued robust connectivity to Japan.

“This adjustment optimizes the number of seats available between Tokyo and Honolulu,” said Alex Da Silva, a representative for Hawaiian Airlines. “Given the current demand, our existing Haneda routes can comfortably handle the volume without the Narita flights.”

New Nonstop Routes from Seattle

While Honolulu travelers lose a direct link to Narita, Alaska Airlines is introducing new international routes. Starting in May 2025, the airline will launch nonstop flights between Seattle and Narita. Later that year, in October, they will also begin nonstop service from Seattle to South Korea.

Looking Ahead

As the aviation industry adapts to fluctuating travel trends, these changes represent a strategic realignment. While Hawaii loses a direct connection to Narita, the adjustments position airlines to respond quickly when demand from Japan increases. In the meantime, Hawaiian Airlines’ expanded Haneda service ensures travelers will still have reliable access to Japan’s capital.

For travelers planning future trips to Japan or the West Coast, these updates offer new possibilities while reflecting the ever-evolving dynamics of global air travel.
