Frontier Airlines is stepping into the premium seating market with its latest offering: “first class-style” seats. The budget carrier announced plans to introduce these upgraded, spacious seats by late 2025 as part of its strategy to enhance customer experience and compete with rivals in the no-frills airline industry.

A New Era for Budget Travel

The revamped seats will replace the first two rows of Frontier’s aircraft, creating a more luxurious option for passengers willing to pay extra for added comfort. While pricing details haven’t been released yet, the airline confirmed the new seating option as part of a broader initiative called The New Frontier, aimed at providing passengers with more premium options.

Following the Industry Trend

Frontier isn’t alone in the shift toward premium offerings. Rival Spirit Airlines recently introduced its “Go Big” bundles, which allow passengers to pay extra for wider seats, snacks, drinks, and other perks. Similarly, Southwest Airlines announced in July that it plans to end its open seating policy, enabling it to charge for specific seats with extra legroom.

These moves signal a growing trend among budget airlines to diversify their offerings and appeal to customers looking for more comfortable travel experiences.

Frontier’s Commitment to Customer Feedback

According to Frontier CEO Barry Biffle, the new seating is part of the airline’s effort to respond to customer demand.

“We’ve listened to customers, and they want more — more premium options, like first class-style seating, attainable seat upgrades, more free travel for their companions, and the ability to use miles on more than just airfare,” Biffle said in a statement.

In addition to the new seats, Frontier announced enhancements to its loyalty program, including free seat upgrades for Elite members, free companion travel for certain status tiers, and the ability to redeem miles for baggage fees and seat bundles. These changes aim to offer greater flexibility and value for frequent flyers.

Premium Seating and Loyalty Perks

The airline plans to provide loyalty program members with the option to upgrade to the new first-class-style seats. Detailed purchase options and pricing for these premium seats will be shared closer to their availability in late 2025.

Currently, Frontier already offers several bundled seating options. The introduction of premium seats further underscores the airline’s shift toward catering to travelers seeking added comfort and convenience, while still maintaining its budget-friendly reputation.

The Challenge for Budget Airlines

Frontier’s move into premium seating highlights the challenges budget airlines face in maintaining profitability with no-frills tickets alone. By diversifying their offerings, carriers like Frontier aim to tap into the growing market of passengers willing to pay for extras without abandoning their low-cost roots.

As Frontier rolls out these changes, it joins a growing list of airlines balancing affordability with premium upgrades, reflecting a new era in air travel where budget carriers compete not just on price, but also on the quality and range of their services.
