Two Plane Collisions at Logan Airport Raise Safety Concerns Amid Holiday Travel Surge
As millions of Americans prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, travelers passing through Boston’s Logan Airport are on edge following two plane collisions within a 24-hour period. The incidents, which caused significant delays but thankfully no major injuries, highlight the added risks during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.
The first collision occurred on Monday around 11 a.m. An American Airlines flight arriving from London collided with a Frontier Airlines plane that was parked at the gate, preparing for departure to Dallas-Fort Worth. The Frontier flight, carrying 200 passengers, was grounded after the aircraft sustained damage. All passengers were forced to rebook on alternate flights, creating frustration and delays during an already hectic travel period.
One passenger, traveling with her mother to a family Thanksgiving gathering, expressed her disappointment. “It’s horrible because my sister-in-law has Stage 4 cancer,” she shared, emphasizing the emotional toll of the disruption. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, but the incident left many passengers stranded and raised questions about ground operations at Logan.
The second collision took place later that same day, around 5 p.m. This time, a Massport tug vehicle towing an empty JetBlue aircraft struck a Cape Air plane that had just landed from Nantucket. The Cape Air flight had three passengers and two crew members onboard. While the impact occurred at a slow speed, the two pilots were taken to a hospital as a precaution. Cape Air reported no injuries among passengers or crew, but the affected aircraft was removed from service for inspection.
Both incidents underscore the challenges of managing high volumes of air traffic and ground operations during the Thanksgiving travel surge. With millions of passengers moving through airports nationwide, the risk of such mishaps increases, even under normal circumstances. Logan Airport officials have yet to comment on whether additional safety measures will be implemented to prevent future collisions.
Though no injuries were reported in either case, the disruptions caused by these collisions have highlighted the importance of vigilant airport operations, particularly during peak travel times. For passengers at Logan Airport, the incidents have added a layer of uncertainty to an already stressful holiday season.
