A dramatic midair incident aboard a United Airlines flight from Houston to Newark on June 12, 2024, ended with passengers stepping in to help restrain a disruptive traveler, according to federal officials.

The Unfolding Chaos

Authorities say Kedus Yacob Damtew, a 38-year-old Washington, D.C. resident, caused panic when he removed his shirt during the flight and allegedly threatened and assaulted a flight attendant. Federal prosecutors stated that Damtew aggressively “pushed his bare chest” into the flight attendant, pinning her against the plane’s exit door while yelling threats.

The chaos didn’t stop there. According to the criminal complaint, Damtew also struck an aircraft oven and later followed the flight attendant to the back of the plane, where he threw a cup of water at her.

Passengers Step In

As the situation escalated, another flight attendant used the plane’s public address system to request help from passengers. Responding to the urgent call, several travelers restrained Damtew using flex cuffs, securing him in the last row of the aircraft until it safely landed at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Legal Repercussions

Damtew has been charged with interfering with flight crew members and attendants by assault or intimidation, a serious federal offense. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

He appeared before Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh in a D.C. federal court on Tuesday and was released pending further proceedings.

United Airlines Responds

United Airlines has not publicly commented on the specifics of the incident but emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety of passengers and crew. The airline’s staff followed protocol by alerting law enforcement upon landing.

The investigation is being handled by the FBI, with support from the Port Authority Police Department in Newark.

Airline Safety: A Growing Concern

This incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by airlines in managing unruly passengers. Authorities have cracked down on such behavior in recent years, especially as flight disruptions increase. Passengers are encouraged to report any concerning behavior to crew members promptly.

With potential consequences including steep fines and lengthy prison sentences, cases like this serve as a stark reminder of the serious repercussions for those who jeopardize the safety of air travel.
