11 Insider Tips for Your Best Cruise Vacation Ever
Cruising is one of my favorite ways to travel. It’s relaxing, fun, and packed with things to do—but there are a few tricks to making the most of it. Here are my top tips to help you have the best cruise ever, whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned sailor. Trust me, these little hacks can make a big difference.
1. Book Your Cruise Early for the Best Deals
If you want the best price, don’t wait until the last minute. Booking early gives you more options for cabins, perks, and sometimes even free upgrades! Plus, you’ll have more time to plan your trip and get excited about what’s ahead.
2. Pack a Carry-On with Essentials
Your luggage might take hours to show up at your cabin, so pack a carry-on with your swimsuit, toiletries, and a change of clothes. That way, you’re ready to hit the pool or relax right away. Bonus: throw in sunscreen so you don’t have to hunt it down later.
3. Don’t Skip the Free Activities
Cruises are loaded with free stuff—shows, trivia, live music, and more. Check the daily schedule so you don’t miss out on something fun. It’s also a great way to meet fellow passengers and make new friends.
4. Reserve Specialty Dining Early
The fancy restaurants fill up fast, so book your reservations as soon as you get on board. It’s totally worth it for a splurge night with amazing food and a quieter atmosphere. You’ll also avoid waiting in line or missing out on a spot altogether.
5. Explore Ports on Your Own
You don’t always need an expensive shore excursion. Sometimes just wandering the town, hitting the beach, or grabbing local food is way more fun (and cheaper). Do a little research ahead of time to find the best local spots.
6. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is key, especially if you’re enjoying poolside cocktails. Fill up your bottle at the drink stations and avoid wasting money on bottled water. It’s also eco-friendly, which is a win for everyone.
7. Arrive a Day Early to Your Departure City
Flying in the same day your cruise leaves is risky—delays happen! Get there a day early, relax, and start your trip stress-free. Plus, it gives you a chance to explore the departure city before setting sail.
8. Pack a Power Strip or USB Hub
Cabin outlets are scarce, so a small power strip or USB hub is a lifesaver. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself when everyone’s phones and gadgets are charging at once. Just make sure it’s cruise-approved—some ships have restrictions on surge protectors.
9. Try Something New on Board
Whether it’s a cooking class, a rock-climbing wall, or karaoke, cruises are the perfect place to step out of your comfort zone. You might just discover a new hobby or talent! Worst case? You’ll have a funny story to tell when you get home.
10. Go Easy on the Drinks Package
Unless you’re a big drinker, the unlimited drinks package might not be worth it. Instead, grab the occasional cocktail or stick with the free coffee, tea, and lemonade. Some cruise lines even let you bring a bottle of wine on board to save a little cash.
11. Enjoy the Ship on Port Days
When everyone else is off exploring, the ship is all yours. Hit the pool, try the spa, or enjoy a peaceful lunch without the crowds. It’s the perfect time to take advantage of all the onboard amenities you’d usually have to share.
